What to expect when you reach out for support

We understand that reaching out for help can feel overwhelming.

We are here to support anyone surviving domestic abuse, or those concerned about the safety of others, regardless of gender, sexuality, religion, or background.

Whether you’re unsure about your situation, ready to take action, or somewhere in between, ESDAS is here to listen, believe, and support you. Our service is free, confidential, non-judgmental, and independent, available to anyone affected by domestic abuse who lives or works in Reigate & Banstead, Tandridge, or Mole Valley.

If you live outside of these areas, Refuge is a nationwide charity that will be able to provide support wherever you live.

Your first step

When you contact us, one of our experienced team members will talk with you about your situation in a safe and supportive way.

We will never judge you, pressure you, or tell you what to do — instead, we will give you space to explore your options and help you make informed choices. We’ll talk you through our confidentiality policy so you know exactly how we protect your information. We’ll also take some basic details to record on our secure system. This helps us keep track of your support and avoids you having to repeat your story.

Contacting ESDAS safely

If you’d prefer, you can give us a different name or other false details. The only thing we ask is that you remember the details you’ve used, so that if you contact us again, we can find your record quickly and continue supporting you without delay.

We will discuss your safety, immediate needs, and concerns for children. Together, we will create a personal support plan covering all areas of your life that may be affected — from housing, finances, and legal matters to emotional wellbeing, social networks, and health.

Our approach: matching support to your journey

Everyone’s journey is different, and change happens at different paces. We use a model called the Stages of Change to understand where you are right now and to make sure you get the right type of support at the right time:

  • Pre-contemplation – You may not yet see what’s happening as abuse or may not feel ready for help.
  • Contemplation – You’re beginning to recognise there may be a problem but are still weighing up your options.
  • Preparation – You’ve decided to make a change and are starting to plan your next steps.
  • Action – You’re actively making changes and building new skills and strategies.
  • Maintenance – You’re sustaining changes and moving towards greater independence, knowing support is still available if needed.

This approach helps us allocate your case to the right service within ESDAS, whether that’s immediate safety advice, short-term outreach, ongoing one-to-one work, or connection to counselling, group support, or specialist projects.

The 12-Week Empowerment Pathway

For those ready for focused one-to-one support, we offer a structured 12-week Empowerment Pathway. Over these weeks, we work together to increase your safety, reduce risks, and build the skills, knowledge, and confidence you need for a safer future. Your personalised plan will focus on the areas that matter most to you, which can include:

Emotional, practical, and safeguarding support

Guidance on rights and entitlements

Exploring safe housing options and rights

Finances

Managing money, benefits advice, and financial safety

Support with injunctions, family court, and other legal matters

Emotional wellbeing, coping strategies, and referrals

Accessing healthcare and wellbeing services

Information and referrals to specialist services

Career, training, and study opportunities

Support can be given in person, over the phone, by video call, email, or text, whatever feels safest and most comfortable for you.

Before your 12 weeks end, we will review your progress with you and discuss what ongoing support might look like. If your situation is assessed as high risk, your one-to-one support may be extended.

If you move on to counselling or group work, our recovery and therapeutic team will keep in touch so you never feel left on your own. Some people go on to receive some support from our trained volunteers.

After one-to-one support ends

When your outreach sessions finish, your case will be closed to your worker, but you can still get emotional support and advice from ESDAS from:

Your rights and our promise

Everything you share with us is confidential unless:

  • You give us permission to share information.
  • You or your children are at serious risk of harm.

We will always try to let you know if we need to share information for your safety, and we will only share what is necessary to help keep you safe.

Above all, we promise to treat you with dignity, respect, and compassion  and to walk alongside you as you take the steps that are right for you.

How we help

We provide free, confidential, and trauma-informed support, including counselling, advocacy, and groupwork, to help you stay safe, rebuild confidence, and regain control of your life.

Who we help

We help anyone living or working in Reigate & Banstead, Tandridge, or Mole Valley who is currently experiencing, or has experienced domestic abuse. We work with people aged 16 or over, of any gender, sexuality, religion, or background.
