Breaking the silence: supporting men who experience domestic abuse in Surrey

Domestic abuse affects people of all genders, yet men often face additional barriers to seeking support. While women are disproportionately affected, it is important to recognise that men can also be victims and ensure they know help is available.

Tragically, domestic abuse-related death reviews in Surrey have highlighted cases where men, feeling isolated and unsupported, have taken their own lives. Many hesitate to reach out due to stigma or fear of not being believed. This silence can have serious consequences, not only in cases of physical harm but also for those experiencing coercive control or emotional abuse.

No one should suffer alone

Raising awareness of support services is crucial. No one should suffer alone. ESDAS together with other Surrey Domestic Abuse services, provide confidential support for anyone affected by domestic abuse, regardless of gender.

Your Sanctuary offers a specialist male service, which is available to men across Surrey and tailored to men’s needs. Mental health support is equally important, as abuse can lead to anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Local mental health services and charities are also available to provide professional support to help men recover and rebuild their lives.

Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, support is available. By raising awareness and signposting services, we can create a more supportive community for everyone.
